Adding Swimlanes (Partitions) in Astah

In Astah, "Swimlanes" are technically referred to as Partitions. These are used to organize actions or states by responsibility or stage within Activity Diagrams and State Machine Diagrams.

You can find the tools for creating Partitions in the Tool Palette located on the the diagram editor.

  • Vertical Lanes: Select the [Partition (Vertical)] icon.

  • Horizontal Lanes: Select the [Partition (Horizontal)] icon.

Once selected, click anywhere on the diagram to place the Partition. To add additional Partitions to an existing set, click inside an existing partition.
